Resumen:
The original coverages were made available by USGS as part of the UNEP/GRID
program.
The coverages were named South America IGBP Land Cover, and North America IGBP
Land Cover.
This coverage was chosen because it had a very simple classification regime and
one which fit the classes we hoped to map. It was also relatively recent (April
1992 March 1993) and had a resolution suitable for the continental scale at
which it would be displayed (1km nominal spatial resolution). However the data
were only a preliminary release from USGS as part of an ongoing consultation
process. The spectral accuracy of the images were therefore less reliable than
they could have been. Despite these reservations the images were reclassified to
produce the image of land use in Central and South America.

The original digital maps were in ArcInfo GRID format in Lambert Azimuthal
projection.
The grids were classified into 17 classes by USGS (see table below).
The grid was reclassified into 9 broader classes.
The next step involved changing the projection from Lambert_Azimuthal to
Geographic projection ( coordinates in Latitude and Longitude).
